  • Odd Cossie 4x4 transmission problem?

Right then, mates 4x4 Cossie got parked up after a good run out, with no problems at all.

Tried to move the car, and it won't go forwards or backwards more than a few feet? Brakes are not seized.

With the front wheels jacked up, they turn in opposite directions freely, but after 3-4 turns the diff seems to go solid, & won't freely turn unless you force it?

I think this points to the front diff, as the centre prop does not need to turn to let the front wheels turn against each other?

What's caused this do you think? Tooth off or lack of oil? Or is there anything else that could cause this?

is all 4 wheels off the ground when you turn the wheels ??

if you have the back wheels on the floor when you spin the fronts thats why its locking up, as it only takes very little nm for the transfer to engage

No, only front wheels are jacked, but shouldn't they turn freely in opposite directions using the open front diff, as the front prop does not move if you just spin the wheels. The odd thing is that the wheels turn freely for 3-4 revolutions, then seem to jam up.

The transfer should only come into play turning both in the same direction?*

Car won't roll or drive more than a few feet in either direction? Clutch is fine, not tried the rear yet but I'm pretty sure it's somthing to do with the front diff?

Only other thing I have just found out is the tyres are slightly different sizes front to rear, 225/35/18 rear 215/35/18 fronts, but would that be enough to kill the centre vc? And if that was dead surely it would just be pretty much RWD like they normally go?

if the vc is killed then it will just be rwd

wheels are suppose to turn in opposite directions rear will do the same

but you can only turn front wheels so far then the transfer comes into play hence getting stiff, need all 4 wheels off ground spin back and all 4 should turn

what does it do when it stops moving

Not entirely correct, the front diff is an open diff, if jacked up front only then the front wheels will turn opposite, the rears if just the rears jacked up then the rear wheels should turn the same direction, the rear dif is a viscous LS unit.

If you have just one wheel off the ground then ressisstance should be felt from front or rear due to either centre VC or rear VC.

when i did mine the rears turned opposite and its an lsd diff

my understand becuase its mechanical then it needs slip to provide lock so free wheeling wont apply any slip

I was doing this last night when I was using my DTI to clock the front brakes. Both front wheels turn in different directions with no problems.
