Anyone know of any good, rust free examples out there for sale? Very difficult car to find with good bodywork, dreaded rust worm destroys these funky little motors. Any help would be great!
Brilliant little cars, just underpowered on track. You will push cossies around corners all day long on a track day. Only cossies with decent suspension set up will corner faster. Just needs more power because otherwise you get stuck behind a cossie in the corners and he pulls away from you on the straights only for you to be up his arse on the corner again as you can brake later, carry more speed and get on the power sooner.
To be fair they dont rust anywhere near as bad as a cossie Typical spots, rear arches, sills around the b pillar. All easily fixable.
They have bottomed out in value, well the shit ones have anyway. Good cars havent really dropped in price for quite a few years, its only the shitters that bottomed out a couple of years ago due to the cost of parts.
In reality youre better off getting a reasonably well looked after regularly driven car than a minter/bufty special. As long as you check the rust isnt right through, then the rust work is simple body shop stuff. Chances are the rear quarters on a well driven car will have stone chips anyway so a respray down each side is likely needed anyway, so rust repairs dont have to be that costly.
Engines are bombproof if looked after with regular oil changes.
You need to decide what you want really, an aspiring classic as an investment or a good fun car to drive. The low mile mint cars are getting rarer and like most things will only go up in value eventually.
if its fun you want, just get one like i described above, throw in a LSD and some power mods and go destroy corners and upset lots of cars worth 10 times the cost.
I'd dissagree to a point with you warren and say the frp would dick on most cossies in the corners with a set of rubber, my cossie with six deg beam, golds etc wouldn't touch my bros which is Boggo with a set of aps and yokos they're incredible cars!
We're just doing my broa 240bhp 9.5k rpm 1700 should be perfect power for the car and munch alot of stuff on track

read what i wrote youth
His car should be fun. My old one was awesome with 220ish bhp through it.
Although if he wants to go hardcore on track he will want to pull 150kg out of the shell first. Made a massive difference to mine when i stripped it properly and put a cage in it.
You said it would only be beat by cossies with decent suspension, I don't think it would,it's so so much better thank well set up cossie, only the likes of mikes car or grp a stuff will be better.
He is looking for sub 1000kg for trackdays will be a weapon,
By "decent" i meant mikes or group A/wrc set up. so we do agree lol.
He should be able to get it well below a ton if he's prepared to go composite panels. Someone on projectpuma is already doing them in glass.
Mine had a moderately tweaked bottom end from swindon race albeit i stayed 1700, light flywheel, big valve heavily ported and polished fully flowed head, crazy cams (more crazy than S1600 ones if i remember right), Boreham roller barrel throttlebodies with carbon trumpets, omex management. Exact details i cant remember as it was 7 years ago now!!
Ok I agree then generally decent is a beam and coilovers
That's awesome spec, pretty much where we are with Ryan's, that will be on big valve waples head. The restriction there would be your inlet as it was designed to be perfect for 220bhp, we've had a custom set of tapered 45mm bodies done for Ryan's so should compliment the higher cr, cams, valves etc can't wait should sound awesome as I bet yours did
Ps yes he done all the development for ford on the road and rally pumas untill mountune took over (as they had a guy at every rally ) and finished the project after trying all sorts pretty much where it left dad and Ahmed!
