  • Big wing sump and baffle

    Yet another question!

I'm rebuilding my engine with the aim of running c.400bhp. The car will be road use only. As I'm fitting a wrc breather, I need to get my sump modded to add the fittings to plumb this in. Should I go big wing at the same time, and should I also add a baffle?

If so, I assume Mike R for the big wing (the price is on his website ), but what baffle is best, where from, and roughly how much £?

    Thanks
    Dave

I would have thought it was over kill for a road car mate. I've read Tony from Turbosystems is best to use for the sump and baffle apparently, as some have actually lost their engines due to poor designs.

Is there need to fit a WRC breather and sump if only for road.

      Dave.

I'd be doing the same as Dave (and have actually been thinking of going down this exact route next year...)
I'd go WRC just to keep the bay looking tidy TBH!

where did you guys buy the baffle etc from if doing it?

Dave - what sort of spec are you thinking, and what are you going to do with the box / diffs?

wrc breather is going on for exactly the same reason as you - keeps the engine bay looking much tidier.

I'm still deciding on spec - and will start a new thread (aka can of worms!) in the next few days. Bottom end needs a rebore anyway, so I'm probably going to get valve cut outs on pistons (cp pistons probably), 6 long studs, wrc head gasket, high pressure oil pump.

I'm probably keeping the standard T34 on the 4x4 manifold for the time being, but may get a light port on the inlet side of the head and uprated inlet cam to go with the Airtec inlet manifold I've got - all to help it breathe better.

These will probably leave me slightly short of 400bhp as the turbo will be maxed out.

I'm leaving the diffs standard (running a strengthening plate on the front one already). Gearbox needs uprating though - toying between Oppliger standard ratio (c.£2,000), Oppliger close ratio (£2,600) or do I bite the bullet and get a Pete Doughty box (£3,500+) - snag with the Doughty box is it's straight cut where the Oppliger boxes are only 85% straight cut - so should be a bit quieter.

Dave I would go big wing sump as its off and it's not stupid money where ever you go, it also future proofs it should you fancy a trackday

Thanks Jimbo. Presume no need for a baffle as well?

Can you pm me a price for big wing on my sump plus dash fittings to suit a wrc breather, a 1/8NPT for a temp sensor and a dash fitting to replace the turbo oil drain fitting.

              Thanks
              Dave

Been having a dig around the web, and as I'm trying to build a bottom end that I (hopefully!) won't need to touch again for the foreseeable future, I might as well include a big wing sump and sump baffle - don't really want to have to pull the engine out again if I do decide to do a track day or two.

Who's best to do the big wing conversion?

Is the Burton's sump baffle the best one to pick - http://www.burtonpower.com/parts-by-...wd-sc1266.html - doesn't seem too bad value at £120.

                  Thanks

i have a big wing fitted without a baffle and had no issues i personally have seen more people have problems with them than without!?!?!?

if your fitting a wrc breather then you need your sump modding anyway for that so may aswell big wing it too ... then you can fit bosses for any sensors you want too.

I have gone big wing sump no baffle and wrc breather and have done a couple of track days and had no issues without a baffled sump I suppose you need to ask if yourself is will I need or push my car hard enough to require it

OH FUCK WHAT WAS THAT NOISE
