  • Still can't seem to get my car running - help!

    Hi guys,

I'm looking for some help. After several weeks of trying to get my EsCos running, it still isn't

I took my mate out for a blast in it a while ago, and it was running perfectly, no missfires etc. The next day I tried to start it, and all it did was turn over but not fire.

Since then I have looked into the following:

    i) Replaced and re-gapped the crank sensor.
    ii) Replaced the phase sensor
    iii) Replaced the plugs
iv) Peformed a compression test, all cylinders reading 120psi (dry) which I understand to be acceptable.
    v) Checked the collant temperature sensor which seems to be working as normal (i'd replaced this a few months ago as well).

The immobiliser is working as normal and disarming it starts the fuel pump as normal. Fuel pressure seems to be normal (as shown on my in engine bay dial), and fuel seems to be getting into the cylinders.

I towed the car with my mate who tried bump starting it. It would only run on 1 or 2 cylinders with his foot flat to the floor.

It would seem to me that there is a problem with the ignition system, but where do I start to fault find? The car is a big turbo model and is running an MSD wasted spark system.

Any suggestions what could be the problem? My patience is starting to wear thin with it

    Cheers,

    Rich

Check the TPS with a multi meter.

are you getting a good spark at plug take one out and see that can eliminate that side......then your looking at fuel side take boost pipe off and give it a spray of fuel from a squirty bottle if she fires its something on the fuel side works for me

Mark - just back in from work so it's probably a bit too late to phone you. I'll be in touch tomorrow late afternoon / early evening once I'm back from the office.

Iain - what are your thoughts behind changing the MAP sensor?

Garet - I've gapped the phase sensor to the Ford spec and double checked it but still no luck

Nash - what voltages should I be expecting from the TPS on the range of throttle positions?

              lee - that's a good idea. Thanks.

I've had a similar issue you may have a bad earth put a jump lead on the negative side of the battery and connect the over side to a good earth point on your car it's worth a try

...so the phase sensor is new one?mine couldn't start until i gapped it .2,,old one had wiring issues i presume wires got brittle..

I found s difference with mine when I removed the ignition amp and found it dry (no grease) put some grease on and replaced and the car felt like it was running a bit smoother... Might be worth trying a new one of these...

I have a second hand known working Map Sensor for sale if you need it. Half the price of a brand new one

Yes, brand new phase sensor gapped to 0.2 as per the Ford manual. The old one and it's wires looked fine but I thought I would change it just in case.

mboon - I am hoping to borrow a MAP sensor off a friend this weekend. It that solves this issue I'll be in touch about your one.

What other faults could there be in the ignition system, especially with the wasted spark kit?

Check the dizzy cap. Mine was hitting at some point.
Check the main lead from the coil to the dizzy, again clean the points.

ws kit,than.....check your power from pin 20(ecu 12v) and earth, maybe this could be problem..also resistance between each tower of the coil...but if you have fuel and not starting my bet is still on the phase sensor, even with the ignition amplifiers...If you have someone close with IAW software you could find error very fast..

When trying to start leave it turning over for 30 seconds... if it starts to.fire its not ignition and more overfuelling
