When I put the handbrake on there should be a red and orange light come on , is this correct?. I'm only seeing the red light coming on, is this the sensors on the abs that are gone??

Nope, only red. Orange light comes on when 1st turning ignition on then ABS goes through check procedure and then should go off after about 10-20 secs.

If you mean what lights come on and off?
Battery light on
Handbrake light/brake fluid light on
Airbag light on (orange) goes through check procedure.
ABS light on (orange) also goes through check procedure.
Screen wash water level light ( orange)
ABS system checks all sensors and brake pressure valve. Obviously if it finds a difference from that in the ECU then the light stays illuminated.

Yea, could be that the "teeth" might need cleaning as they do suffer when dirty.
As it been standing for some time!?
