  • Stating the obvious but had a little shock..

Having a little fiddle on Excel tonight, adding up costs of a medium/high spec cosworth 500/600 bhp engine build with all the extras by pricing the single components and very little labour cost... not even got on to the transmission / brakes / suspension and its an eye watering amount! That too with 'conservative/ low end' figures...

This will not be a surprise to most who have gone down this route... and apart from some unnecessary items and mods like liners in my list there are quite a few who have gone to this level.. so im guessing not far off the figures in front of me

    Total so far £20'500....

Now I understand when tuners quote their crazy 'drive-in, drive-out' figures..

Well it's not something I have taken the plunge with personally... always tempted me naively thinking 'how much can it cost really?'... the answer.. a lot!

          Hello mate

Excel and cars are a bad combination!!!

The problem is excel can do hundreds if not thousands of equations. But I have looked long and hard and there is no 'man maths' button!

I bought an astra estate for the mrs last year. Man maths said buy for £4500 and spend a few hundred quid to add a few nice parts. I used our friend 'excel' the other day and the total cost is £7000. How did I spend £2500 on it!!! For £7000 I could have got an insignia!

I bought my escort cheap and have spent a fair bit on it but excel has never been allowed near the receipts pile.

As said previously delete before the mrs sees it.

You just need to take the engine out. Spend a bit on it. And when she questions the couple of grand on the turbo you just need to say the following. :
The rest of the build has cost 'next to nothing'
When you consider how much I can sell the old part for it costs very little.
          Hair looks nice love. ...!

          Cheers

its a reason that a godfrey engine is over60k...

1 of mine have passed 10k only on the engine it self,(the head is probaly over5k alone) witout anything like turbo, innlet+++

quality cost, 500bhp shit engine is cheap but useless..

but trow away all recepies and everything that can show how much you have used, or else you Will get depressed...

What I'd like to know is.....

Now I'm not in a bad payed job about £35/year, single and have no debts (apart from living costs etc)

So how to f**k do you lot afford to pay that much on your cars!!!? I spend a bit on mine, but by no means anywhere near those dizzy heights!!! And I couldn't afford to spend that anyway. If it came to that, I'd sell up.………FAST!

Consider that to go from 840bhp to an attempt on 1000bhp will cost over 22k puts even those figures into perspective. I would not have spent these large sums of money while i was building my life thats foolish.
I was 54 & set up before I started spending this type of money.
My only advice to those thinking of spending loads of dosh - Build your life before a car or you will regret it because life is longer than you think.

It would be good to see your costing to see where the money goes.

How are you still single if you're making 35k a year I wanna know

You're not spending the money in the right places mate. These cars can be relatively cheap if you just save and spend on them from time to time....plus putting them on laid up policy for 6 months of the year helps reduce maintenance
