  • The bottom of my dipstick has snapped off

Having not had the car long the first thing I did was have it serviced. I thought tonight I would check the oil level for my own piece of mind. Pulled the dipstick out and thought to myself I'm sure it was longer than this I'm guessing the end of it has broken off somehow? Am concerned now that there might be a piece either in the tube still or is it likely to be in the sump? Any ideas how I can retrieve it? Am guessing it's not advisable to drive the car incase it causes damage?

    Thanks, Jamie

The metal part of the dipstick measures 356mm, could someone be kind enough to measure there's pretty please so I can see how big of a piece has broken off.

Looking at the dipstick closer it seems to have broken off at the max mark where it's cutout slightly for the marker. So is quite a large piece 2 inches or so? Missing. Also I'm unsure if the dipstick pictured is incorrect for my car as it has an rs500 engine and think this is an escos dipstick?

try a decent sized magnet on the sump nut it may attach its self if you drive it carefully drain the oil and fingers crossed ,or drain the oil if no joy put an endoscope camera in the sump hole cost about 60-70 quid now or borrow one off an electrician had the same problem with an old capri but dropped the sump on that as was only 2wd

Drain the oil and put a long flexible magnet in there.

Before you throw the old dipper away save the O ring from it as I needed one once and couldn't find one the right size anywhere !!

Hope you manage to retrieve the missing bit

Thanks mate, have kept the O ring as you said Managed to retrieve the broken bit from the dipstick tube and dropped the oil anyway, second time in 100 miles and now have a nice new yellow dipstick in there

Cheers mate, i think its a common fault as is a weak point on the dipstick. I guess with age and all the in and out action they can become weak

Seems quite common I think, must be a weak point on the dipstick.
