  • Problem with Instrument clusters

My instrument clusters don't seem to be lighting up as they should and I don't think the triple clocks light up at all if so there very dim. Has anyone suffered the same problems? how do I fix or can these be refurbished? This has happened as long as I can remember. Since car has been in storage the last few years I've also lost digital display on clock and both frost indicators stay on, these problems have happened at totally different times so I'm guessing there not linked in relation to problem. Thanks in advance.

Cheers Georgie Is it a simple process and what's involved? What causes this problem and can it be prevented? And last if all is it a common fault? Thanks again

You might try the fuse for the clock mate, that's the first thing to look at.
And the clocks look like some of the bulbs have gone to me by the way it is lighting. Is your dimmer roller switch okay by the way, because I had issues with the one on my old car?
        Cheers

I have a feeling it may be a fuse on digi clock, I've been meaning to check for the last few days.. Will def look tomorrow. My dimmer roller seems to be working and I've left it in brightest position for obvious reasons. Did your instruments go like mine TREVCOS?

To me the main clocks look like some of the bulbs have gone on the main dash by the way its lighting some bits and then the light is passing into some of the other bits.
                Cheers

Before all this is the dimmer connected? If not you won't get illumination....

From the pic the dimmer is connected as you can see lights on , there should be NO bulbs fitted in the rear of the dash as all the dial illumination is done by electroluminesent material ! Looks to me as if the inverter is faulty hence no a/c voltage to excite the electroluminesent material . The light you can see is incorrectly fitted bulbs in the rear of the dash bleeding past the dials ( the dial faces are not designed to allow light through)

The dimmer switch must be connected as it does dim the bulbs but it's turned all the way up at present. :-/

As Brendan says the next port of call in the inverter it's prone to going I'm not sure how it's replaced but someone else may help you there but that I think will be the problem even if the material wasn't good it would still give something off your isn't so it must be the inverter...

I had this with my clocks when i bought it and it was the inverter behind the clocks.

There is a thread available somewhere showing step by step of how to do it. Got the part from RS components for about £25 and it took about 2 hours to do including getting the clocks out and in again.

It's a little bit fiddly to do but pretty straight forward for a competent DIYer if you follow the instructions in the thread. Worst bit is probably getting the speedo cable on / off

                              Hope this helps mate
