  • Help! Weird Saff cossie 4x4 hub problem?

I have converted my 4x4 cossie to 2wd, leaving the 4x4 stub shafts in the front to hold the hubs together. The car runs 18" Comp MO's in the correct offset, and 215/35/18 tyres, and Koni conventional shocks/springs. The car has always been fine with wheel/tyre clearences, but recently I have fitted adjustable TCA's ,and a new wheel beaing on the nearside.

On taking it to get tracked up at a 4 laser wheel alighnment centre, there was a burning rubber smell. I put it down to the tyres scrubbing as I drove due to being so far out trackwise without a set up...

Turns out the nearside wheel is sat tight against the Koni spring platform, and has eaten a good 1/4" deep and 1/4" wide groove out the inside edge of the tyre :w all:.....

Is it possible to fit a wheel bearing incorrectly enough to cause this? Can't see it being the TCA's as they do not alter the distance between the wheel and the shock leg, only the distance to the lower subframe mount changes....

    HELP

possible if you have left something out, maybe the dust seal?, so its pulled the hub into the carrier further

thats the only reason i can think of, and the tca wouldnt get the wheel anyway near that even at full extent as the tie rod o the rack isnt long enough to cope with that much movement

when fiting some 18s you have to hit the spring cup with a hammer for clearence

It is odd, the car has been run on the Comp Mo's 6 spokes (new style) for ages, with no problems by the previous owner. I have had the car 2 years, but not used it at all due to trying to get the escort sorted, and coverting the saff to rear drive. It was all fine before I had a wheel bearing collapse (front nearside where the problem is) , but I had a brand new ford one fitted at the same time as compbrake TCA's....

Most annoying, the only thing I can think it might be is what Doug suggests or maybe the wrong wheel bearing? .. WHY is nothing ever simple?

          Wil,

If you want to pick up them xr4x4 shafts there are hubs with them, you could do a test with the xr4x4 hubs to narrow it down to the bearing in your cos hub.

          Cheers
          Dan

P.s. I'm in tonight if you want to nip over?
