  • Type of engine?

    Hello.

Our racing team is the new one in Cosworth family and I need advice about engine type because of parts to buy and information for me. I was reading something about Cosworth engines, I have learnt something but I still don't have answer for few stuff..

I know that we have (probably) YBB engine, year around 1992. Not the T25 engine. But I am not sure if it is 2WD or 4WD engine. There are components from both of engines. According to me it is 2WD because of exhaust manifold, oil filter on the side of the engine, but three hole termostat housing etc. But lot of things were adjusted (turbo, intake, sump, termostat,tubes..) Car is 4x4 of course.

Can anyone tell me according to photo which type of engine do we have?

Thank you and sorry for my english..

A rallycross unit i presume, would it not be worth phoning Mike callaghan as his name plaque is on it, i presume its one of his engines and more than likely numbered with all info logged

Other than that i say its a well specc'd powerfull and well built unit, and has a tibuc inlet

4x4 units are stamped 200 blocks, on side of block in big lettering part of the cast

2wd are 205, id very much doubt that will be a 205 block

You have a 4x4 head on there, you mentioned exhaust manifold being 2wd, not sure how you think this as it has a full tubular manifold on it which is probably inconel too.

Doesn't the 2222 on 205 block where selected at source in factory , out of the 205 cast run?

2222 is the bore size of cyl 1 through 4. Size 2 or 3 suited mahle forged pistons.
          Cheers

I think Chris means the 2222 is only found on 205 engines as they were selected from the line as suitable for Cosworth conversion whereas the 200 blocks didn't have the bore grades stamped into the block as it was only fitted to Cosworths.

I remember my old 2wd saff had 2222 on the block but don't recall seeing any stamps on any of the 200 blocks I've had

Just checked my blocks, early 3 door 205 block has 2222, 2wd sapphire block has 2222 and an my early 4wd 200 block also has 2222, il check my new block also.
Thought it would be a 200 block with that blower bolted on the side!

There is a big 200 on the side of the block. Originally this car was built for rally cross. We are going to hill climb tournament with that engine in Fiesta..

So despite the fact that there are things of both engines I should buy parts for 4WD engine?

I'd say it depends on what you're buying, not much standard parts on there...

well its a 4x4 block then.

it also has the 4x4 head as there is not mounting point on the left side of the head where the 2wd have turbo hangers bolted too.

JHS: In this case I am interested in gasket top end set. If I want it to buy, there is 2WD and 4WD choice. It would be probably same..maybe something will not fit. We'll see..

Davecos 4x4: all right.. I was watching video of differences between 2WD and 4WD and that guy said that 2WD has oil filter on the side of the block and 4WD has oil filter in the back of the block. In this engine is filter originally on the side.. So it maybe confuse me..

we got a Pectel ECU inside, but still not perfectly tuned.. But I have done quick dyno test and there was 560hp and 870Nm.. or something around.. Now the car is completly dismantled, we will modify interier, exterier and for the end engine itself..

4x4 200 have an oil filter arm, who is connected to the block were 2wd filer is, you can remove this, so it`s got filter on the same place. Can`t see the filter on your pictures, i gess it`s have an adapter to move it up for easier changes on this kind of race engine.
Matt Lewis motorsport have al gaskets you need. As said over here, give the builder a call if you not sure on spec

On this engine is oil filter adjusted little bit different.. from the original place (threading), leads big steel tube to the adjusted placement of oil filter holder.. It is attached to the body of car on the side (somwhere above a left wheel)
