  • Cosworth potential

    Hi

I am looking to buy an escort coswort but wanted to know what they go like when tuned?

I sold my R35 last year as I wanted something different and think this may be an ecos. My Dad has owned a standard 96 one since new that has done around 20,000 miles so I have a soft spot for them and I grew up in Essex and fast fords were a favourite there.

Lets just say around 400hp, can this be achieved reliably? and how does it stack up against performance cars of today?

    Thanks in advance
    Dan

Hi and welcome to the site 400bhp is quite achievable mine is 400 standard small turbo engine with a twin scroll turbo setup from M.A.D and I love it had a few highly tuned subaru's and golf's in the past but the cossie is by far my favourite most unreliable part at 400 will be the gearbox and there is not really a cheap option unless you just keep refitting standard ones.
There like anything else really they have as much potential as you have cash!

Mine has a 380bhp MSD conversion with black injectors, wasted spark etc. I asked MSD about it before I purchased the car as I was concerned about a standard clutch and gearbox etc. The front brakes had been upgraded to AP pots so it certainly stops ok.

They replied that it should be very safe at that limit. Must say it is lovely to drive yet you can drive it like a normal car if you prefer. No pops or bangs when running and just sounds superb Awesome to drive not that I ever use it to full potential.

I have the invoice for all the work and they did a thorough check over of everything before they did the work and it was rolling road tested afterwards. Not mega bucks considering the difference it makes.

yes its not the horsepower that ruin the gearbox, but the torque... but the torque is the real power so gearbox and diff is first on the Upgrade list, and brakes can be smart...

Weighing in.. against todays cars.. a remapped diesel 535d will probably be quicker than most stage 3 cosworths.. The modern Japanese stuff are very capable cars..

I have had a decent powered R33 GTR (500hp) in the past which is a great car, my Escos is only stage 1 but I love it, for how often I drive the car it feels pretty quick but gor me its more the road presence the Escos has, everybody looks as I drive down the road, you look in your mirrors an all you see is that huge rear wing or bulging arches, the motorsport heritage and that feeling that you have something special that not many cars give you, when I was in Comprehensive School there was a guy local to me with a imperial blue ecose that all of us used to stop and stare at walking from school, no Porker, M3 etc had the same effect back then.

Don't get me wrong your previous R35 is probably one of the best road going all rounder cars that money can buy, phenomenal in fact and a old 1990's Ford Escort doesn't really compare in terms of technology etc but the Escos will certainly make you feel you have something special

400hp is easy and very reliable if the base engine is good and been looked after.

                      Thanks for the replies.

Yes the R35 was an immense car, scary at times but I wanted something a little different so I am actually having an evo200 built (Rs200 replica), I know how some feel about replicas but its an awesome looking motor and wont cost 100k+ to buy and more to upkeep, but I have always loved the ecos so am seriously considering buying one but would need it tuned.

Is forging the engine needed to go above 400hp?

What gearbox is going in the 200. The last one I biult had a Renault box and it was terrible to select gears. 480hp it went well

The engine will sit the same way it does in the real car, with a 6 speed rear drive box running to a reverse transfer box at the front then out to front and rear diffs. The transfer box will also be able to disengage the front diff to make rear drive only like the original.
