  • Magnesium or alloy , how to tell difference,

I have just recieved , my rl7's, for getting them refurbed, I need to know for getting them refurbed, wether they are alloy or magnesium, I would say from feeling the weight that they are alloy but I need to know for a definite what they are for getting them refurbed, as my normal guy said he doesn't do magnesium ,

Any help would be great thanks

My experience with RL7 (and I've had a few) is that the mags have stamps normally indicating the material on the inside spokes. But the best way is to weigh the wheels WITHOUT tyres, as the mags are lighter than alloy. Only a few companies made replicas from the original Raceline wheels, but most mags I've seen have cracked over the years of motorsport abuse and have clear repair marks. I've yet to see an alloy RL7 with repairs.

Spotted these on ebay too, so worth a shout. I doubt 2 listed out of 5 are 9x18 though because the 9's had a bit more of a dish to them on the edge.

Also due to a few refurbs on mags, the indicating stamps on the inside spokes would eventually be sanded away. Not easy to identify these

Lifting them , they defo feel like alloy, As there aren't that light, there has been no repairs to them, so I'm hoping they are alloy as they will be easier to get refurbed, I'll look harder a bit later on to see if I can see any markings, or does any1 know what the weight would be?

                Vinegar Test

A common test for magnesium is to put a drop of vinegar on the bare metal. On magnesium, the vinegar will bubble; on aluminum, it will not. If it bubbles, quickly neutralize with water before the wheel is damaged.

I had my mags done by a motorbike wheel refurber as he deals with them all the time.
