  • Thermostat Help Please.......

As part of the coolant refurb I'm replacing the thermostat, so new one has arrived from Graham Goode, but its different from the one o took out, it has a rubber seal around the edge which in theory would make a good seal with housing lid..... question is, the gap in the photo is before I tighten the bolts so is this correct, or do I remove the outer seal off the new thermostat and just seal with gasket seal..... Apologies for all the questions, just want to do it right..

    All advice is much appreciated....

    New thermostat sat in housing.....

The rubber gasket is too thick .....You can use the old one if it is not broken..i got the same but from Matt Lewis next one i got the right thickness rubber gasket..

      Hi
I had the same type gasket, it is fine when pulled up with bolts.
The 2 faces the seal sits on should provide the seal so not an issue

Cheers, but the old one didn't have a gasket, just some what I assume was gasket seal on the thermostat lid.. it didn't leak..... that's what's prompted the question, I think if as suggested I did leave the seal as is and tightened the bolts there is no reason why I wouldn't get a great seal, but wouldn't look odd if the faces of the thermostat housing aren't "together".......

That's what they call the little pin that sits on the flat edge of the thermostat that makes it easier to bleed the system. The gold/brass coloured bit in your pic.
              Cheers

Cheers, got it, the one I took out didn't have this, so I assume this new one is exactly the right thermostat....

Sebb, so in the end did you leave out gasket and just seal the housing faces or just pull it up with gasket in place? ive same issue with my new housing and new burton thermostat unit

I had the same issue but upon tightening the bolts it sealed up perfectly (Burton thermostat)

with this gasket that goes round the edge u won´t need any seal.

Do you mean do away with the stat seal and just use a bit of instant gasket on the 2 housing faces?

Rob, I used the gasket as is and it did weep, nipped it up and it's better but it still ever so slightly weeps, I intend to change it out and when I replace the radiator, been told the one from Matt Lewis is the right thickness.....but cant be sure, let me know what you go for...
