  • What voltage do you see from your alternator

    Hi

Can you guys tell me what voltage you see on average when your cars running? Driving and idle

On the fiesta cozzy I only ever see 13.4v Max and I'm sure it should be around 14.4v

Think it may be time for a new 1

    Thanks
    Marc

What is the current rating of the alternator you are using ?
Are the diameters of the alternator and crank pulley the same as original ?

Will look into a new regulator

Steve - it's a 90amp alternator I believe and yes pulley size is as per oem

yes the reg is broken, change it before something gets burned...

You may find that the alternator is not keeping up with demand with two fuel pumps, epas, heated screens, gearbox oil pump, diff pump, lights and wipers etc, I realise you rarely have them all on at once, but you can often measure a voltage drop with just a few of those running even if the alternator is running at maximum output.
Depending on idle speed the alternator may not be self excite so the battery voltage drops.
Either way I would be fitting a higher output alternator, you can get a 120 amp which fits with minimal or no modification.

Take it to an auto electrician to have it tested. Did mine a couple of weeks ago, regulator (most common problem) needed replacing at £15 and bang, instant 14.4v on idle from 12.8v.

Anything around 13.4/5 V or above is fine. As mentioned above 16V is too high and you will cause damage to items on your car.

Remember you should be taking your reading directly from the battery.
