  • Wheel spacers the truth

...i seen many so called experts saying dont run wheel spacers particualary 5mm ones on a cosworth, of course sometimes you need them to clear an aftermarket brake setup...but oh no you shouldnt use them because the wheel no longer rests on the hub but the wheel studs themselves...i always said you can because i am totally DIY so have first hand experience.....So just a photo of the 5mm wheel spacer i will run if need be:

Really do run on the studs dont they

dont forget though that the back of the wheel is usually tapered as well so that leaves very little to actually sit on the hub

Also it does appear from that pic that the holes in the spacers are not the EXACT size of the stud and can therefore move around whilst 'located' on the hub?

5 mm dont look to bad tho.looks like the wheel would still sit on the hub.

Depends on the inner shamfer on the wheel, but it is supposed to have that amount of protrusion for a reason . Personally, I think 5mm is the absolute limit, and it would be constantly on my mind at high speed .

I too have PERSONAL experience of 5mm spacers (on my Escort when I bought it, with AZEV As to clear the 4-pots). They caused a vibration like the wheels were out of balance and were binned (along with the wheels) .

them ain't proper cosworth spacers . i have driven a escort cosworth with near 3 inch spacers that are bolted on to the original studs and then the original bolts go into the spacers .
