  • cossie breather system experts??

on my escos i currently have a 4 port bailey breather, i'm currently breathing both sides of the block and a drain to where the old kidney box use to be and a vent to atmosphere.

but i will be having a sump made up soon, and i'm thinking, should i be having a port welded in for the oil drain, to be below oil level? as ive read its better? why is this?

also i will be wanting to breath both sides of the rocker cover should i just use two tee joins into the oil breather pipe that goes to my turbo side of the block to link the rocker cover in?

    cheers

the return needs to be below oil level so its not pressurised, the esc cos has one though, there is a tube to the side of the kidney box,are you sure your not already using this?

dom, where the kidney box was should be hole in the block thats where u breathe from then theres a small pipe coming from the sump below it thats the return to the sump

yer this is how mine is done at the moment but i'm going for a 2wd sump and i'm wondering will the sump have that drain hole as standard? and is that drain hole too high for the ultimate breather?

yes im sure the 2wd is the same setup u dont want it any lower or ul get surge of oil up the return pipe on hard conering plus i think if its lower than the normal level it wont allow the returned oil from the breather to run back as quick

oh ok im wondering if my current oil drain is actually on the block not the sump but still lower than the original breather hole. just where the sump meets the block as i cant seem to see pictures on 2wd sump of a drain off.

2wd sump does not have a drain hole, just a return to sump for the turbo, which is above the oil level.

hi andy thanks for your pictures, so in your last picture, this is the oil return pipe you have had fitted in to the wing of the sump? will the oil come out of there and go up the pipe, but will remain the same level as the sump oil. surley its a week join for a oil leak? maybe not.

ive just looked at a 4x4 sump on ebay and i can see they have a drain pipe under the inlet. so should i have a tube that diameter welded into the wing of my new sump as you have?

but once the oil drain tube has oil in it, eg when you fill up the sump for the first time and oil goes out the drain hole on the wing, when the breather also feeds oil down the drain surely that pipe will keep filling up with oil all the way to the breather?

                  cheers

oil ,like any liquid will find its own level, the oil in the drain tube wont be under pressure as it terminates below the oil level in the sump, so any oil that goes down that return pipe will end up back in the sump and the oil levels in the sump and return pipe will be the same all the time

Basically the fitting on the side of the big wing sump in the picture above is the breather oil return to sump.

Dont bother breathing from the rocker cover, read this article and you'll find you have the right setup already.... http://www.grahamgoode.com/breath.htm

Breath from both sides of block and thats it
