Just replacing the speakers will not make a massive difference, you really need to up the power also.
This is because most high end speakers are not as efficient as the standard ones so need more power to sound their best.
My personal favorite speakers are CDT as they give a home audio sound in the car & give excellent stereo image. They can be listened to for hours & hours without getting listening fatigue (that feeling someone has hung lead weights of your ears)
If you want to make a big difference without going o.t.t I would put an amp in first, you will be suprised at how much better the standard system is with a bit more power, with the right amplifier you can run all your speakers AND a subwoofer to make the sound warm & rich. (This dosent have to be huge or heavy - just to fill in the missing lower octaves)

For the best sound quality an Alpine stereo would be the answer as this allows i-Pod control, mp3 / wma /aac,USB and copy cd's etc as well as hands free phone kit (to stop the points from the plod)
If this really is not an option...
The standard stereo has line outs but the lead has to be modified so it can be connected to better amplifiers. (solder rca connectors) I have done this before on Grandad-adas and had good results – I will have to check the Escos will work just as well before recommending it as there are differences.
There are a few ways of using standard stereos with amplifiers using interfaces etc but the lead mod is the best way.
