  • Tech Question - Please help , 2.8 cologne power loss ??

Can anyone offer some advice please?
My 2.8 capri has been sat up for around 18mths and now its back on the road its feeling flat as a fart and feels like is bogging down all the time. I've done a general service which included plugs, leads, dizzy cap , rotor arm and new filters throughout , I drained the old fuel and filled it up also adding some fuel system cleaner at the same time. The ingition timing has been checked and set.

When i start it, it will cut out straight away so i have to rev the engine so it wont cut out but once revved then i can leave it to idle. The car has no thermostat in it from what i can tell as the blowers never get hot when driving and the temp gauge struggles to get off its bottom resting point. If its left to idle for a long time until its nice and hot its feels more powerfull but not for long as it cools quickly when driving again.
Any help would be great as its pissing me right off atm. lol
    Cheers.

Ill ask my uncle tommorow as he knows capris inside out, got roughly 15 at home now and half them are 2.8.

I remember he had a similar problem with his 2.8s, he changed the fuel pump and the k-jetronic airbox lid and i think it was alright after. When we stripped it down after, we saw that there is a arm inside that pivots as more air is being drawn in and iirc this had seized or stuck so it wasnt getting the right amount of fuel

it has nothing to do with the thermostat i'm afraid,

you should start by cleaning the idle valve then if it still persits clean the injectors

if u want to send them to malta i'll clean them for you!

Just spoke to my uncle loader (dont know your name sorry ) and he sais look at the needle in the k-jetronic air box lid as these stick over time (his did) but bit of advice dont strip it completely as theres two faces that are metal to metal no gasket and he could never get it to reseal afterwards.

Next he said on the front of the engine theres a warm up regulator, its got a fuel pipe going in and one out and a electrical connector. Its got a bi-metal spring in it apparently that goes weak. This controls the fuel as the car warms up so it sounds like it could be this. He said change it for another one (he tried 2 different ones as the first didnt make any difference then the third it was mint )

Try these first mate and let me know

Warm up reg's can be a fault with the 2.8 lump but it MUST have fresh fuel in there before you go pulling things apart.

I would drain all the old stale fuel out,

The easiest, but not the safest way being to crack the fuel pipe off the top of the warm up regulator, get someone to hold the fuel pipe in a can and put the ignition on.

This will only work though if your purple fuel pump relay has a yellow spot on the top of it as these relay's prime the pump on ignition and not when cranking.

Some of these products reduce the octane rating of the fuel, so unless you have a fair bit of fresh fuel in there it could run like a bag of nail's

Been there with my own 2.8 Capri as it happens, and got the t-shirt
