  • Gearbox rattle.

I might of covered this topic in a past life, i have a gearbox rattle at idle when not in gear, when you depress the clutch it goes away, now this is my second box, first one full rebuild by bara, current one straight cut PD rebuilt box, Different boxes same issue, its not the CRB I've changed it and the clutch and pressure plate, Anyone had the same issues, almost sounds like I've not got oil in it.

    Its driving me mad.

Did you change the spigot bearing in the back of the crank?
    Cheers

Think this is normal with straight cut/ modified gearboxes Darren
My one also has a slight rattle/ rumble on idle

I think, like Dan, that it's 100% normal with a straight cut box. If you think it's bad, think back to the rattle from the ZF 5-speed boxes in Escort rally cars! Once had mine ticking over outside a shop, and an old guy comes out and says "Your big ends are away, son!"

its really noisy, but the standard box does exactly the same, i really cannot imagine them coming out the factory like that, i'm no gearbox expert but i think it turns a set of cogs when the clutch is not depressed and not in gear (first motion), When Bara refurbished my standard box he changed loads of warn bits, chains and all sorts and the thing still did it. I might drive it over and let him have listened to it, although this box he's not had his hands on it.

Did you end up with the straight cut PD box or helical one Darren?
My box from Pete does have a slight rumble as said but not really noticeable but the I have standard gears apart from 2nd and 3rd

Its not fully straight cut, but its a noisy fucker. Was thinking of putting the old one back TBH. Need to do a few more miles with it and maybe turn the audio system up, see if i can live with it.

                Yes give it some time
is it not overkill for your set up?
Drop me a message if you ever decide to sell it or fancy a
p/x for my PDE box as that’s only noisy in 2nd and 3rd then quiet in all the other gears

I'm currently at 380 bhp ish, but got some plans to go further, so will probably need to get use to it.

My Bara box was embarrassingly noisy. Sounded like a bag of spanners at idle.
Make sure the torsion/ damping springs in your clutch plate haven't become tad loose.

As mentioned, check your spigot bearing. The dont look like they do much but it is essential.

My Bara built Fixit gear kit into my box, it is well noisy on tickover, put the clutch in and its silent, spoken to him about it and TBH he was more taken aback that he had built it like 2 years before and basically i think he thought i was taking the piss, but you know how long projects can drag on.

Anyway sent a video clip to Milke R and he said that is exactly how his sounded.

Done over 1000 miles now and dropped the oil and its clean, drove it today and it still sounds wrong to me !

My Pete Doughty semi helical box is the same - quite noisy at idle but sound pretty much disappears when I depress clutch. Standard box by comparison was a lot quieter. Can't say it really bothers me though.
