  • gear knob and gear stick

hello i have a question, i have a 1992/3 big turbo escos and need to know if it has a pull off or screw on gearknob. Also over the last few days the lift up part under the gearknob has started to fall apart, it is the bit that you lift up to select reverse gear. I t is made of plastic i think it is just perishing with age and the heat. Is it possible to get another one or is it no longer availible? Is there a heavey duty replacement, i can get. At the moment it is very hit and miss getting reverse.
    thanks.
    TONY.

Yours will be a push on knob Tony and it sounds to me as if the cable inside is starting to frey fella

Could also be the lift up collar which is dead as there is a lift up tagin there that the cable connects to.

I have spares in work i can post to you Monday if your stuck

I have a small turbo, and my gear knob is screw on, and ever since i had the car the gear knob would always move freely as in spin round whenever you changed gear, i found this quite annoying, so i thought i would investigate the problem and made the hole thing worse!

I thought i would hold the gear lever with one hand and with the other i would try and turn the gear knob to see if it would all tighten up, but found after a few turns i broke the cable in the middle of the shaft that you use to select into reverse! opps!!! Didnt know about this cable at the time!!

I then went to my local ford garage to order new parts but you can only order the hole gear lever, so i ordered it, i broke the gear lever on 1st december 2009 am still waiting for the part to this date as it has gone onto back order!

I thought i would try and find another garage who had one and found one in germany, so i ordered that one and i have now fitted it to the car, i also have installed a new leather gear gaitor!

I have left my original part on order to see if it turns up, and will keep it as a spare!

Happy days!!!! at least i have solved the problem with the moving gear knob!! its nice an tight!!!

When i first broke the gear lever, i took the center console out and when i first looked at it, i was like, shit, the gear box has to come out, then i looked again and found a roll pin, just knocked this out and changed gear lever for new!!

Hope you enjoy my story!! That will send ya to sleep!!

If it is a pull off gearknob that big plastic bit (not the collar) should just pull off (it'll probably take a good pull though). I think I had a similar problem with my old big turbo car. I did this and went to Ford for a new knob, tried to put it on and it wouldn't fit because of that bit that should be still in the knob still being attached to the stick, so I thought they'd ordered me the wrong knob. I think what I did was try to screw my old one off (because that's how my first small turbo car was and I didn't realise the big turbo was different), and so it just mangled up the inside of the knob so it came off but left that bit behind. Hope that's of some help.

The collar does look pretty mangled though too as others have said.
                              Cheers
