often the tabloids use the blanket "officer" term for anyone from a Non commissioned officer upwards. I used to be the media officer in one of my jobs and i was only a Lieutenant but in the tabloids got referred to as "a Senior Officer" when im not.

Its only the semi-accurate broadsheets that use rank.

purely speculation, but perhaps a seriously troubled sailor and redundancy notices as they are annoucing redundancies at the moment. Might be enough to push someone over the edge and take out the officers.

I doubt we will ever know the true reasons just speculation.

Thank god for that eh Richie.
Its sad all around that such a tragedy has happened. Looks like he has flipped, discharging his fire arm more than twice and into the control room as well.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the deceased family and I hope the injured personnel recovers.
I have seen men under stress, including myself, at sea for 10 to 12 weeks with out surfacing. But in the Submarine tradition we have always helped watch out for each other and help to overcome our problems. This must have been a very tragic train of events to result in such a tragedy. IMHO and I only guess here, but I recon it will be family related in some form or another. I'm sure it will all be revealed shortly.
Truly a sad day for the Submarine Service.
