I would get in touch with the local DVLA office they are very helpful, explain the problem and ask for the V5 to be amended properly. They may want to inspect the cars vin numbers/plate to verify what your asking but at least your know its sorted once and for all might cost you £20-55 but its money well spent.
I would also go to your local 'friendly' ford dealer parts department and ask them to do a search on the chassis number on what I think was called the EDIS system (someone please tell me if that's the wrong thing as it was a long time ago) and they will be able to give you a print out of the factory build sheet which will prove everything and your have inconclusive proof of what the vehicle was build like out of the factory (as long as the chassis numbers are deffo correct) If your parts department can't help you might be able to get the info through Duncan @ automotive unlimited as he got mine.
I think it would be more then worth while getting this sorted once and for all, I don't suspect its actually a problem but it getting everyone else to believe you where the issue lies.
If you would like to take pictures of the chassis numbers above and below the body next to the drivers seat, the tag in the windscreen with the chassis number on it and the vin plate, pm me them and I will investigate them to make sure they are correct with help from the RSOC registrar among others.. please don't worry if the underside of the chassis in the floor has a section of black mastic that's how they should look.
I would also book yourself a valuation with cossiecrazy Mark Barber RSOC registrar and he would be able to verify whether everything is sound and probably put someone thing in writing to that effect.
Lot of mucking around but for piece of mind and sanity I would advise doing it.. may even up the cars value

it does not bother me it says saloon either because i have had a 3dr cosworth saloon too and the idiot at the dvla said they could not change the system,so i gave them the reg of a famous 3dr cosworth rally car and wow 5 mins later it was changed and they backtracked

My local DVLA office where really helpful with the import papers and procedure when registering the VW bay and that's just a forty year old bus so I think they will sort it for you. I wouldn't bother phoning Swansea thou, I'd go in person to your local office face to face

if you send all the paperwork off they give you the option of one of the dvla staff calling you if theres a query so its worth including your number, you can phone them but thats like watching paint dry waiting,i don't know why the dvla can register millions of escorts previously and then cock up how they register a imported one but they do.

Rippers, had this with Peg. Showed the incorrect plate on the ETIS with the correct chassie number. Was a personal plate around the time it was new so must of put it on this. Both number plates came back as A Escort RS Cosworth
This is purely admin in my eyes, cannot see the problem with the guy who sold it either, he must of went through these checks as well, he seemed like a nice guy and the car is stunning!

Just compared my old cosworth to this one and although the information is the same, you can tell it has been put in by differnt users etc. It does not follow a template etc, just whatever the user puts in, 4wd or 4x4, MTX75, With aircon aircon ticked... this kind of thing
Handy tool though

Right all good.
Car has been checked by ford technician on m- cat and Ford Etis systems and is all good.
All the previous points ie 3 door saloon, are incorrect admin inputs on different systems.
Car is legit.
Only thing now is waiting for logbook to come through and then have them change it to how it should be. And if they want proof I have it all printed out.
Car was physically checked over aswell and all vin plates and stampings are correct with Ford.
Looking back to the cars original paperwork with Dagenham Ford it was imported by themselves for it's first owner.
I am over the moon.
Thanks again for everyone's support and ideas. If in doubt, flat out !
