Nordschleife, there's only two barriers to worry about - the ones on the left and the ones on the right .

so is my grp n(read standard, polished and shot peened )rear diff strong enough to take any punishment what so ever but its the front grp n(as above ) that i should worry about. i will check to see if it has the plate but will that still put up with abuse or does it need going stronger.

the bloke who built my box mentioned a tremex diff as being tough enough for anything but ive never heard of them

save your money, a guy called cossiemandan *EDITED NAME THANKS WILL* uses a std diff with steel plate and it does a 10 second 1/4 mile with lots of power, lots of others have the steel plate with no bother too.

Thick fancy cover plate fandangos are a waste of money (unless your into shiny shit and want to pay through the nose for it)...no offence mike but a steel plate & std cover is as good if not better than your cover is it not? just doesn't look as nice as your effort

you wont be worrying rear diffs unless you are over 400BHP, in which case your best cheap upgrade (as I have done to mine) is just to stick in a 2wd rear beam and 7.5" Diff (ratios are near enough idential to the 4x4 one so interchangeable) with 108mm flange drive shafts ... Front diffs are a bit of a lottery, but apparently the plate makes them a lot better, but again a thickwall one over 350BHP is advisable IMHO... Then its the gearbox, front shafts etc etc

I got the name wrong, was cossiemandan.

Wil can you remove the original quote to stop the confusion over the name plz...

I think with a strengthening plate you'll be fine, obviously a lot depends how you drive, but for the money and the extra piece of mind its worth it even on a std car IMO.

                  Cheers

The diff cover that I do also acts as a small sump, so also gives increased oil capacity and is actually more rigid than the steel plates . The extra oil capacity helps keep the front diffs cooler on track, so hardly a waste of money .

If you saw what happened to my gearbox and diff casing when the front prop let go, the only thing that was holding the diff together was the cover .

I think that prooves its strength, as this was a Quaife thickwall casing . In fact the strengthening plate was undamaged is now living on Franco's diff .

dont you think the diff may have exploded as your cover flexed too much? If the casing didnt flex so much why did it crack if it was the prop failure starting the destruction off then it has no relevance to the strength discussion.

You could quite easily use a steel plate and mod the std cover with the capacity for 1/2 litres more oil quite easily and for a lot cheaper.

Not having a go mike, I just like to look at things realistically when spending money, others choose not to but thats their choice

                      Cheers

                        A few points:

                        1) Does franco know that he has your sloppy seconds Mike?
                        2) Oooops , was that the flailing prop that took out the diff casing or the diff failure causing the prop to shear?

                          1. Of course he does .

                          2. The flailing prop took out the diff, the gearbox (a hole you could put your head through), it also smashed the clutch so that it was locked solid

As to saying that this doesn't show the strength of it is a bit bizarre, when the shock wave took out the casing in such a manner that is typical of the CWP climbing over each other and splitting the casing (there is no physical damage to the diff). However, it was so severe that the thick-wall casing could not prevent it either.
