  • General Question - whats the diffrence between a motorsport escort cosworth?

I am looking for a white escort cosworth and have seen a very nice one today, its high spec but is a 95 (m) motorsport car, it had big turbo engine, I thought m reg should all be small turbo

the guy says the difference is they have no sunroof and cloth interior, I really like the car, but I need to know if it will hold its money like other cosworths

    what are your thoughts

the "motorsport" is several... but the "real" is no sunroof, hole in boot to gastank(not sure) less weight than normal, manual windows, no opening rear side windows, almost sure its a motorsport interior(its stands motorsport in seats) long time since I have seen one. no sunroof and cloth is not just for "motorsport" but can also be a base model...

when thinking, sure JHS car is a motorsport(and belive one friend of him also have one? he probaly come in)

There are 3 types of Motorsports.

The first is a factory made and dealer sold one like a standard or a lux model and will say Escort Cosworth on the log book. These were early big turbo homologation cars available in the usual standard colours but most seem to be white. They cost the same as a standard car and are now very rare as most will have been converted for group N or other motorsport etc and maybe broken up by now. They are a stripped out light weight version without any of the following as standard - no sunroof - no radio - no aerial - no fogs - no headlight wash - no electric windows - no central locking - no electric mirrors - black door mirrors - no boot release - no padded arm rest - no rear head rests - no air con - no light in boot - no light in glove box - no low fuel and washer warning lights - a riveted plate in the boot floor for quick access to fuel pump - no mirror on passenger sunvisor - fixed rear side windows and maybe a few more things too.

The second is a 909 Motorsport trimmed shell in white only that is the same as above but no engine, gear box or running gear that you bought from Ford but was not an Escort Cosworth on the log book. These were for people who already had a sierra rally car that could be used as a donar car for all the parts in a modern shell to keep their costs down.

The third is a bare 909 Motorsport shell that was either used to reshell a car or build a group A / N rally car from scratch.

thanks for this info, I might need to look at it again, from what your saying it could be any of them, but it has air con and electrics, looks like a high spec normal cosworth

Is it down as an Escort Cosworth on the log book for a start. Only a factory / dealer one should be and i believe these were just the first batch of cars so should be a K or possibly an L reg. It may just be down as a 2ltr Escort and built up from parts. If its a factory / dealer one then they are worth the same as any other cosworth but if its one built from a trimmed or bare shell then you really have to base the price on the quality of the parts used and condition and spec. For example it could have 15k worth of engine etc. Quite hard to value a built up one as each one is kind of unique but if just bog standard parts are used and it was in the same condition as a standard road car then i would say it would be worth 5k less due to not being registered as a real one. Just to note also the RSOC only recognises a genuine road registered car and not built up ones even though they are genuine shells.

I think a lot of cars will have had bits added over the years but the main thing is whats on the log book and do all the chassis and engine numbers match up from factory.

All 3 versions of Motorsports will have a boot floor like the pic below with a riveted panel for quick access to the fuel pump. Standard and lux models do not have this.

The idea of the road Motorsport was for enthusiasts to upgrade their car for a bit of rally / track action. The good old days.

Have you asked mark barber if the car is registered with the club. I have a feeling if it is a motorsport shell with the boot floor like the pic above on an M plate that it has possibly been reshelled and all the extra toys in it will be from the donar car. This could then maybe still be down as a cozzeh on the log book if unregistered. I believe all the genuine road Motorsports were sold in 92/93 at the latest for the homologation deadline. Put the add up or reg and somebody may recognise it. Have you done any checks on it.
