Sounds like D J has it all covered

Have you got the chassis number for it?
Pictures, maybe someone here knows the car and its history?

back in the day lots of motorsport shells were used to reshell sierras and they normally have a mixture of parts on them, whats the chassis number then one of the guys can look it up for you to see what it left the factory as

So that is the second version on my list above. This should be on a Q plate if built up and put on the road and not down as a Escort Cosworth on the log book. The only way it would be down as a Escort Cosworth is if it had the ID from a genuine road one and all the running gear fitted. A Q plate one would be worth around 5k less than a similar condition / spec standard road car but not sure what its worth or even legal using the ID from another one and being unrecorded.

PS try and get some pics off him of the new trimmed shell as i have been looking for ages for some pics.

I would ask him how its registered as an Escort Cosworth without a Q plate if built from a trimmed shell but get the pics first please.

Trouble is if its been done unrecorded it will just show up as the original donar car that will have been a real one. For me him admitting it was built from a trimmed shell but not on a Q plate makes me say walk away.

If you do go and have a look at it then make sure you have a good look underneath as bare and trimmed Motorsport shells didn't have any underseal like the road MOTORSPORT / STANDARD / LUX models had.

I presume this is the car
                  http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C411860

it has been on and off ebay for the last year so if you really want it and the paper work is ok am sure it would be worth a bid lower than his asking price

Whats with the "andy rosse" stamped plates, thought he only raced the sierras?

Maybe thats just the engine then?

If you get the details of the vin plate surely it can be decoded to see what spec the car came from the factory...the doner car I mean.

seems bizarre how somebody would order a motorsport with aircon and cd etc if it had started out as a normal es cos and then been reshelled into a motosport shell because of an accident that would make more sense?

I would bet it was a 909 build, there is not one 'dealer sold motorsport' element about it other then the lack of sun roof. Plus whilst its not unusual to have a 94 M-reg Big Turbo (mine is) a 95 Big Turbo M-reg would have had to be registered late.. plus I have only ever seen early 'dealer sold motorsports' on 92/93 which again leads me to believe this is a build up.

I would research it further and get the chassis number, number plate and some better pics, the angles on that piston heads listing conveniently don't quite show the angles of what I need to see to make a proper estimate.

but if it is a build up.. on a proper Esc Cos id then buy on condition

A trimmed Motorsport shell wouldn't have had the chance for any options and they would all be the same.

Can you reshell a car legally and keep the original plate or should they be on a Q.

Thats not strictly true when checking out motorsports on the ford system in the past I have seen some with Recaro front seats as options and fog lights, so I don't know what else would be available .. although I'm calling bullshit thou as why would you order a motorsport then spec it up.. surely you would just buy a lux

Here's a theory.. maybe it isn't a motorsport and it actually a white standard.. but again, standard didn't have quick clear, electric windows and rear opening quarter lights among other things.. it certainly isn't a straight forward car and it maybe to the sellers advantage to work out what it actually was specced as new with.

I believe the options were only for the road Motorsport cars which were a special factory order. Mine has the recaros and fogs fitted. I would have thought all the trimmed shells would have the same spec and you buy it as it is. I even think the trimmed shells come without the front seats at all.
