  • Ford rust proofing.

Is it best to have this removed if your doing an underside restoration? After nearly 20 yrs I can imagine it might hide a few problems.

Be good to hear people's experiences.

As with most things on these it depends on condition.

Personally I'd be loathed to remove it if it's in good condition

Fair comments, so it should just be a case of cleaning and painting if its in good condition.

I'd be interested in knowing what people do paint the underneath with. I'm seriously thinking about cleaning mine underneath (not removing any original stuff, just cleaning off the dirt), then painting with a coat of hammerite to keep the rust off, then a coat or radiant red over the top. Does that sound sensible?
          Cheers

I dont think going over the top is a good idea unless you are sure there is no sighn of rust
whatsoever if not you will only cover up something which will carry on eating away without you knowing and you might end up with a teabag
I found rust was under the original underseal in places which was not visible untill it was stripped off. Give it a good clean and decide what you need to do Trev.
            Good luck

An underside restoration means stripping all underseal off so you can treat everything properly in my eyes. Its a pig to get off but the only way where you can see exactly how rusty or not your car is

Are you going to take the side skirts off as well mate to see what the sills are like, or have you already? My car is actually pretty clean underneath, it's quite low miles, so I'm hoping a good clean down and a refresh is enough, I don't think I'd have the patience to strip all the underseal off.

Oh, just hit myself hard on the finger with a hammer trying to separate one of the rear hubs from it's bearing. Thankfully it was a rubber hammer, and so is my finger now.
                Cheers

I have actually got some waxoyl spray, which I'll probably put up in the recesses, when I get that far. And if I do end up taking the side skirts off I'll cover the sills in it. Not sure whether to do that or not yet though.

Sounds good mate, I love your resto, a lot of seriously hard graft there mate. I'm going to do mine over quite a long time I think, although I am doing little bits every day. I do want to drive it sometime but to be honest my Mondeo is a car I can (and do) use every day and it handles better anyway and doesn't cause me much grief.
                        Cheers

I agree with you, I'd always be wondering if I'd just painted over the rust that was hiding under the Ford underseal. Not much point in doing that unless you know for sure its not damaged allowing water in etc.

For those that did remove the Ford stuff did u find it was hiding rust rather than preventing it??

For those removing it, I bet it was a right royal pain in the arse!
