Hello
I've been seeing a few comments I noticed that you have been intouch with the company that owns the tooling for the 18" wheels but for some reason you are struggling the get these remanufactured. I'm actually in the foundry industry, although in steel but I have some good contacts in aluminium die casting.. It's only a thought but would the original company sell on the moulds??
I know you are now looking at China but though I would just ask.sigpic

That's a shame. if the tooling was able to be transferred you could go straight into production. But to restart you will need to 3D scan an originial prior to cutting tooling and I reckon this will be £5K before you have even started. Most UK companies will then want to radiograph the casting to make sure its sound prior to full production.
It's a difficult decision to make when you can get a set from China for 1/3rd of the price.
If the China route falls by the way side I will try and help with a UK option but I'm guessing it won't be cheep and numbers will have maybe 50 sets or something like that.sigpic

I can have the 3D model done in the UK for under 1000 GBP. The mould will cost initially GBP 3000 in China. Shipment by sea is another 1000GBP. So we have overhead of 4.8K, i.e. 40 per wheel. Then including import duties, VAT, the variable cost per wheel, including finishing, excluding center caps, comes at 120 per wheel, so the set price is currently at 640 GBP, excluding center caps and shipment within UK.
In other words, already having the mould would lower our overhead with 4K, i.e. 33 GBP per wheel and significantly reduce the time to get this done. (which will be autumn/winter earliest I'm sure)
This is based on 100% 'fair' payment of import duties current negotiation with Hangzhou manufacturers, I expect this can go down still.
With respect to finishing - it is what we want as a group - I can have them copy the original ford center-cap paint, but if the match is not 100% it will show. Alternative is that they also produce the center caps and spray paint everything at once in the same color. Will be a 6 layer paint system by the way. Primer, base coat, 2 wet-in-wet color layers and 2 varnish wet-in-wet.
With respect to making 19 inches or 9 inch-wides - anything is possible at this stage - My personal opinion is that 19 inches or 9 inches are too large/wide for my escort, I'd prefer to go for 'as original as possible', but hey, if everyone here wants to supersize, let's go for it!
With respect to pre-payment, I think that's fair, because then people are really committed. Would half of the set be a fair down payment, i.e. 300GBP? I can set up a payment site from my company and give people a receipt. Of course, since we're a club here, money will be returned if the project doesn't succeed or when the don't get the quality of the wheels 100% right.
Love to hear your thoughts.
BTW - does anyone have original parts number of the center caps and retail price in UK, assuming it is still available?18x9J inch delivered! New (and probably last) batch being produced as we speak - se posts here

Do we have a time frame?
The genuine ford caps are £23 each and still availableLast edited by Jamie Young; 08-07-2015, 15:44:28.sigpic
